Shana Moulton’s interdisciplinary works in video, performance, and installation blur the lines between autobiography and fiction. In Whispering Pines, the artist’s long-running series (titled after the mobile home retirement community where she grew up, just outside of Yosemite), the artist layers digital animation, collage-like installation and performance to explore the trials and anxieties of her alter ego, Cynthia. Poignant and funny, Moulton’s work implements everyday objects, symbols, body parts, and even medical devices into a kind of surreal spiritual framework that offers a wry critique of wellness culture and contemporary life.
