Raised in London, Dr. Gilbert trained as a physical therapist and worked in hospitals for 10 years, specializing in respiratory and intensive care medicine. After completing a teaching certificate and a doctorate in anesthesia, he combined university teaching with clinical work. Moving to California in 2000, Dr. Gilbert joined the Biology Department at Â鶹´«Ã½ in 2004, becoming Department Chair in 2016.
